Little One

Little One

A ladybug's wings on your fingertip
You're spellbound by the polka-dotted marvel
You are not grown enough to be taught concept of now
For you, time is undivided

Look - you toss your head back in delight
As afternoon light catches your joy
Your eyes shine
In this transient moment, made infinite

My mind races ahead, anxious, planning
But your uncomplicated gaze reminds
Life can only be lived in the present
Future not yet born, past already gone

You have not forgotten me
Offering me a flower picked from the garden
A humble daisy, its beauty eclipsed
Wrapped in your radiant smile

Clouds drift across the sky's canvas
Your small hand tucked in mine
Together we watch this painting
Unfolding stroke by stroke

You stop, bend down -
What captivates you now?
A line of ants carrying crumbs
Across the sidewalk cracks

I join you, watching grandeur in the tiny parade
Your eyes wide with innocent fascination
Oblivious to the endless hustle around us
Living so fully in the moment

A butterfly flutters by, alighting near us
How wondrous, did I hear you whisper?
Are you the divinity that dwells
Outside my life so mundane

I too yearn to see everything anew
My wonder was veiled by life years
For now, I want to treasure your world
Before it slips into memories, like sand through fingers..
